Personal Statement
As the only child in my
family, I realized the importance of communication very
early. I was eager to make friends, shared my thoughts
with them and at mean time listened to theirs. I believed
that people and other creatures living in this world
were afraid of loneliness, and communication just helped
us feel warm, safe, happy and smart.
While, during
the first class of the communication theory in XXX University,
when teacher said communication is not only a mutual
behavior between individuals but also an interactive
message sending-receiving procedure between social systems,
involving many kinds of humanities, I was deeply impressed
and became very interested. I realized what I took the
meaning of communication for granted since the childhood
was so narrow and limited.
I became
a part-timer at the Sports Channel, China Central TV
two years ago. Now having experienced various jobs in
broadcasting field, I find that mastering the interviewees'
information like characteristics, and backgrounds of
the stories beforehand are very essential. These information
could be a preparation for effective communication,
which greatly help journalists have good previsions
of interviewees' feelings so that to say right subject
at the right time.
I still remember
when firstly worked as a journalist in CCTV during the
1st World-cup Wushu Sanshou Competition, I faced a very
difficult problem. I had to interview the athletes from
Egypt before the match to make a video introduction
for the next day. However, since it was already 5 p.m.,
time was very limited. What's even worse was that these
Egyptian athletes only arrived in China for an hour,
let alone they didn't look friendly at all, thus coming
over straightly to ask for an interview was not a good
idea. I suddenly remembered there would be a welcome
feast at 8 p.m., and no time could be better for me
than that, for everyone would be relaxed and happy when
having a wonderful dinner. As the result of my flash
inspiration, I made acquaintance with them in the dinner.
However, in order not to bother them much, I didn't
mention my intended interview at first, but changed
the subject to talk about Egypt, and introduced them
about China. Because my preparing knowledge of Egypt,
we had a very pleasant conversation, and at last they
agreed to accept my interview after dinner even though
they were tired and would face tough competitions the
next day. More touchingly was that when the game was
over, they gave me a very beautiful postcard as a souvenir.
In that interview Just because I used effective communication
skills to handle my problems, I finally got what I wanted,
and more I made new friends.
During my
third and forth college year, I interned as a photojournalist
in Xinhua News Agency. Here I had abundant opportunities
to know communication from a very different angle-using
camera to record what I saw and communicating with people
silently but deeply via photos. I was very exciting
with this special communication way. And meanwhile I
found different from what many academic books said that
news photos record images objectively, photojournalists
actually always take pictures subjectively, using light,
big or clear images, certain angles or typical moments
to attract people's eyes and influence their thinking
ways. As a result of this experience, I read extensively
in communication and journalism works, and specially
wrote a paper to research and express my opinion on
subjectivity and objectivity in the news communication.
I always feel that I'm very lucky to study in the Journalism
Department of XXX University, and to work at CCTV as
well as Xinhua News Agency. First because the best school
and the best working places of the country let me have
precious chances to know communication comprehensively.
Yet more importantly, through four-year painstaking
study and two-year working experience, I become fascinated
to the dramatic effects caused by communication and
am eager to study clearly why and how all these happen.
I make up my life goal to be an excellent scholar in
communication and devote myself to the communication
career.
However, I
know very well if I want to touch my goal, I need to
acquire advanced theories and technologies in the field.
China haven't got dynamic communication study yet, and
many of its theories are obsolete, therefore I want
to pursue my Master then Ph.D. degree in the Communication
Department in your school. Admittedly, the United States
is the avant-garde in studying communication; a mature
researching methodology has already been set up systematically.
But in particular, I am deeply impressed by your school's
renowned communication education, and the carefully
designed courses emphasizing both practice and theory
are just what I want.
During my
graduate study, I plan to focus my study in mass communication,
and I also want to learn communication history and advanced
communication theories. "What changes has the hi-tech
tools brought to the people in the communication procedures?
Where will the mass media head to in the future?"
etc. are questions I want to find answers. Besides,
I want to study Internet, because although Internet
is a newborn media, it is very flourishing. Internet
influences the traditional mass communication and its
future is full of suspension, so intensive study about
it is absolutely essential. I strongly feel your unique
course will provide me the chances to learn it more.
I also expect to participate in the class discussions
in your university. I want to share my knowledge of
Chinese culture, professional experience in mass communication
with other students of the class, and discuss communication
issues with them together.
I'm ready
to put my heart and soul in the graduate study in your
school. I believe your comprehensive education and my
own effort will help me touch my goal.
Thank you very much for your time. Please consider me
as a candidate. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
