I
became aware of the importance of communication early
in life. As an only child, I had to reach out in order
to make friends, and quickly realized that communication
allows us to share our thoughts and feelings, and thereby
form connections with others. This basic view of communication
was later enlarged by my study of communication theory
in XXX University. During my first class, I was introduced
to the notion that communication consists not only of
exchanges between individuals, but is also an interactive
process that involves the sending and receiving of messages
within and between social systems. Thus, my studies,
together with my natural inclinations, led to a profound
interest in the theory and practice of communication.
In addition
to my studies, I have gained practical experience in
the field of broadcasting. Two years ago, I joined the
Sports Channel of China Central TV (CCTV) as a part-timer.
Through my work, I learned the importance of pre-interview
research, as well as how to stay attuned to an interviewee's
responses in order to introduce the right subject at
the right time. For example, while covering the first
World-cup Wushu Sanshou Competition for CCTV, I was
faced with a difficult problem. I needed to interview
some Egyptian athletes before the match to prepare a
video introduction for the next day. However, it was
5 p.m. when I received the assignment, and time was
limited. Furthermore, the Egyptian athletes had only
arrived in China an hour earlier, and they appeared
tired and uncommunicative. It did not seem like a good
time to request an interview. Fortunately, I remembered
that a welcome feast had been planned for 8 p.m., and
I decided to wait until the athletes were relaxed and
happy before approaching them. During the dinner, I
made acquaintance with the Egyptians. However, instead
of immediately asking for an interview, I drew on my
background research to engage them in conversation about
Egypt. When I finally made my request, the athletes
were happy to comply, despite the late hour and the
tough competitions they faced the next day. Most touching
of all was the beautiful postcard they gave me as a
souvenir after the games. Thus, using effective communication
skills, I not only obtained my goal, but also made some
new friends.
During my
third and fourth year at college, I interned as a photojournalist
at the Xinhua News Agency. Here I was given the opportunity
to learn about a different medium of communication.
I was excited to learn about the profound, though wordless,
communication that takes place via photos. At the same
time, I began to question the view, put forward in some
academic texts, that news photos record images objectively.
Rather, I found that photojournalists always incorporate
elements of subjectivity, using various lighting effects,
large or clear images, certain angles or typical situations
to attract people's eyes and influence their way of
thinking. As a result of this experience, I read extensively
on communication and journalism, and produced a research
paper on the topic of subjectivity and objectivity in
news communication.
I feel fortunate
to have studied at the highly regarded Journalism Department
of XXX University, and to have worked at CCTV and at
the Xinhua News Agency, two broadcasting organizations
of national importance. These experiences have given
me a comprehensive background in communication. Furthermore,
four years of painstaking study and over two years of
practical experience, have led to my pronounced fascination
with the dramatic effects of communication and my eager
desire to further study the cause of those effects.
Thus, my goal is to become an excellent communication
scholar and to devote myself to a career in this field.
To attain
my goal, I am aware that I must pursue advanced studies
in communication theory and technology abroad. In China,
communication studies are still in the developmental
stage, whereas the United States is at the forefront
in this field, and has established a mature, systematic
research methodology. Your school in particular is renowned
for its communication department. I am deeply impressed
by your carefully designed program, which emphasizes
both practice and theory. For this reason, I hope to
pursue my Master's and Ph.D. in your communication school.
I plan to
make mass communication the focus of my graduate studies.
I also wish to deepen my knowledge of communication
history and advanced communication theories. I am interested
in such questions as "What changes have hi-tech
tools brought to the process of communication?"
and "Where is mass media headed in the future?"
In addition, I wish to study the Internet, for although
it is a recent form of media, it is flourishing rapidly.
The Internet is already influencing traditional mass
communication and more change is to be anticipated.
Therefore, intensive study of this medium is essential.
I strongly believe your unique program will provide
me with the opportunity to pursue these lines of study.
If given the
opportunity to study in your program, I expect to fully
participate in class discussions, and to share my knowledge
of Chinese culture, and my professional experience in
mass communication with other students. I would welcome
the opportunity to exchange views with them on various
communication issues. In general, I am prepared to devote
myself fully to graduate studies under your guidance.
I believe the comprehensive education you offer, together
with my own determination and effort will ensure that
I attain my future goals. Therefore, I hope you will
consider my candidature favorably and I look forward
to your response.
